Douglas Adams · Detective and mystery stories · 1987
The universe, it seemed, had a way of getting itself into the most absurd and inexplicable situations
It was a place where the impossible could happen, and often did, with alarming regularity
And in the midst of all this chaos, there existed a being so uniquely adapted to the unpredictability of it all, that he had become a sort of anti-hero of the cosmos
His name was Dirk Gently, and he was a holistic detective.
Dirk's method of detection was unorthodox, to say the least He didn't bother with tedious things like clues, or evidence, or even facts
No, Dirk's approach was far more intuitive
He would simply feel his way through a case, using his profound understanding of the interconnectedness of all things to guide him
It was a technique that had served him well in the past, and one that he was confident would continue to do so.
As he sat in his office, a small, cluttered room above a health food store in London, Dirk pondered his latest case
A wealthy client had hired him to investigate a mysterious disappearance, and Dirk was determined to get to the bottom of it
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and let his mind wander.
The case, as it turned out, was far more complex than Dirk had initially suspected
It involved a group of people who had all been connected, in one way or another, to a man named Gordon Way
Way had been a physicist, and a brilliant one at that, but he had also been a man with a number of secrets
Secrets that, as Dirk soon discovered, had led to his disappearance.
As Dirk delved deeper into the case, he found himself drawn into a world of intrigue and deception
There was the beautiful and enigmatic woman, who seemed to be hiding something; the brilliant, but slightly unhinged, physicist; and the mysterious, electro-mechanical monk, who seemed to be able to perform miracles
It was a cast of characters that would have been at home in any ordinary detective novel, but this was no ordinary detective novel.
The universe is a pretty big place, and if it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space.
Dirk's thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of his client, who was growing increasingly impatient
Dirk reassured him that he was making progress, and that the solution to the case would soon reveal itself
But as he said this, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was missing something.
It wasn't until Dirk received a visit from a man named Thor, who claimed to be a god, that the case really began to take shape
Thor was a Norse deity, who had been sent to Earth to investigate a series of strange occurrences
He was a man of immense power, and yet, he was also strangely vulnerable
As Dirk soon discovered, Thor was being pursued by a group of beings, who were determined to kill him.
As the stakes grew higher, Dirk found himself drawn into a world of myth and legend
He encountered a range of characters, from the enigmatic Kate Schechter, to the sinister, and slightly deranged, Odin
It was a world that was both familiar, and yet, utterly alien And at the heart of it all, was the mysterious, and highly improbable, Electric Monk.
The Electric Monk was a creature, unlike any that Dirk had ever encountered It was an electro-mechanical being, with the ability to perform miracles
But as Dirk soon discovered, the Monk was not just a simple automaton It was a being, with its own thoughts, and feelings
And it was a being, that was capable of great evil.
As the case drew to a close, Dirk found himself facing a dilemma The solution to the mystery, was not what he had expected
It was a solution, that challenged everything he thought he knew about the universe And it was a solution, that raised more questions, than it answered.
In the end, Dirk was left with more questions, than answers He had uncovered a conspiracy, that went all the way to the top
A conspiracy, that involved gods, and goddesses, and even the fabric of space, and time itself
And at the heart of it all, was the mysterious, and highly improbable, message, that God had left for humanity.
Don't panic.
As Dirk pondered the implications, of what he had discovered, he couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, and wonder
The universe, it seemed, was a far more complex, and mysterious place, than he had ever imagined
And at the heart of it all, was the enigmatic, and highly improbable, Dirk Gently
A man, who had stumbled upon a truth, that was both profound, and utterly ridiculous.
